New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan is a seasoned jurist who is no stranger to Trump’s orbit. In the lead-up to the start of the trial, Trump fanned the flames on social media with his views on the judge. “Judge Merchan was always well-prepared, accessible, and – most importantly in the Weisselberg matter – a man of his word. Trump also claimed Judge Merchan has ruled against him in pretrial motions “because his daughter makes money by working to ‘Get Trump.’”Loren Merchan has not commented publicly on the case. David Paterson appointed him to the New York State Court of Claims in 2009, the same year he began serving as an acting New York Supreme Court judge.

Trump’s team is working around the limitations to keep him interacting with voters and donors. As he did during his earlier fraud trial, Trump will seek to ensure he remains front and center. The location was chosen out of convenience, as Trump is expected to stay at Trump Tower during the trial. Some of Trump’s advisers say that his presence in court throughout the trial will continue to benefit him — despite keeping him off the campaign trail. In addition to utilizing his courtroom appearances, Trump will be “driving his message with both in-person and virtual events on court days,” the campaign official said.

CNN —Three months ago, Donald Trump took the stand before a jury of nine in a New York courtroom without his typical bombast or ranting. “The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom,” Judge Lewis Kaplan announced, in case any jurors had missed it. “I mean, our whole case was about the fact that Donald Trump is unable to follow the law, unable to follow the rules. But just having political views about Trump, for or against, won’t be a reason for potential jurors to be dismissed. When Kaplan asked jurors a series of questions individually, Trump turned in his chair to watch each person speak.

New York CNN —It took Donald Trump less than 24 hours to test the boundaries of Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order in his New York criminal trial. Inside the courtroom, Trump has been admonished and threatened with removal for being disruptive. Outside the courtroom, Trump has repeatedly railed against the charges he faces in front of cameras and attacked all of those involved on social media. Engoron issued a gag order on commentary about court staff that covered his clerk, fining Trump twice for breaking it. In the federal classified documents case, Trump has appeared several times before Judge Aileen Cannon, whom he appointed.

CNN —The swift conviction of Donald Trump’s former trade adviser Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress sent two warnings to the multiple co-defendants in the ex-president’s approaching criminal trials. The second is that loyalty to Trump can be hazardous and often gets those who show it cross-wise with the law. Navarro, for example, who is is unrepentant and a true Trump believer, pledged to appeal based on executive privilege issues. (A CNN poll released Thursday found no clear leader in a hypothetical matchup between Biden and Trump.)
